Cancun offers numerous magnificent opportunities for snorkeling. The largest reef in the western hemisphere is only a quick swim away from the shore and offers snorkelers a chance to experience this amazing underwater playground. This underwater world houses many tropical fish species, dolphins, porpoises, turtles and many different types of sponges and coral. Snorkeling in Cancun can be compared to swimming in a massive fish tank; the water is normally very calm and warm and has great visibility.
There are also ecological parks, well equipped dive centers and tour operators that offer tours to the less accessible snorkeling spots. There are quite a few companies in the area that rent snorkeling equipment and offer guided tours as well as lessons.
One of the best snorkeling spots in Cancun is at Xcaret which is a Mayan-themed ecological park. The park has some stunning coral reefs which you can explore as well as magical underground rivers. From Xcaret there are a few scuba diving and snorkeling tours to the Maya Reef. This area offers some of the very best snorkeling and scuba diving in the world.
Those that have never snorkeled might worry that it will be too difficult but most people can get the hang of it within an hour.
